Senior Serve Corps Success Stories
SRI’s Senior Serve Corps is dedicated to promoting service, matching potential volunteers with opportunities in community and government agencies, and working to support organizations’ use of volunteers. As such, volunteers are our passion.
Mike Little, aged 61, retired last year after a 35-year career as a mechanical engineer. Like many “baby boomers,” he still has agreat deal of energy and now he has the time to give back to the community. Mike signed up to be one of SRI’s event volunteers, working at volunteer fairs, Serving RI week clean ups, and the 9/11 service event at Gilbert Stuart Middle School. Once he got involved in episodic volunteering, Mike became interested in helping to improve academic achievement in Providence’s Middle Schools. Through SRI, Mike was able to connect with Inspiring Minds, an award-winning nonprofit educational organization dedicated to enabling our city’s public school students to succeed in school by providing the personalized help they need to grow academically and socially. Mike is using his engineering, math and science background to tutor high school students. He has found it to be such a rewarding experience that Mike will also be tutoring Gilbert Stuart Middle School students in math and English through SRI.
